The Belonging to Place inquiry sequence was originally designed of for a Grade 2 French Immersion classroom, although it could be adapted to other grade levels and learning contexts. It consists of 5 interconnected units, each designed to take about 5 weeks. The sequence is intended to guide students in developing increasingly rich relationships with place, community, and each other.
Unit 1: Noticing Place
Unit 2: Seasonal Observations
Unit 3: Reciprocity & Reflection
Unit 4: Expressing Belonging
Unit 5: Cenebration of Learning
It is intended to demonstrate how connected learning can remain firmly grounded in place, community, language, and identity while using technology to make learning visible and shareable in ways that would otherwise be inconceivable.
French Immersion classrooms in my community tend to be relatively homogenous places with greater inherent privilege, less complex dynamics, and fewer opportunities to encounter diverse perspectives than their English-program counterparts. This work is intended to broader students' understanding of place, community, and ways of knowing while fostering meaningful relationships with local environments, Indigenous perspectives, and the wider world.
